Five months later and we are finally getting around to updating the blog! Big sister Carla Ann is proud to announce the arrival of Joseph Edward Geck born on 5/30/13 at 7:42pm weighing 7 lbs 10 oz and 21 inches long.
With our growing family we have set up a new blog. To follow our new adventures, please visit: www.growinggecks.blogspot.com
Things got really exciting around here this week and it's not because I've gone into labor. (Today is my due date but no sign of his arrival anytime soon). Carla figured out how to climb out of her crib! I know it was only a matter of time but I was hoping to put it off as long as possible. I'll admit that I loved having her contained in her crib knowing I didn't have to worry while she's sleeping. Plus, I was happy to let Carla keep using her crib just so it was one less transition to put her through with new baby's arrival. But she had other plans. So we got her a big girl bed and today was her first day to use it.
It was all she could talk about all day. She loved getting to help pick it out and put it together. When it came time for her nap she crawled right in but once I left her she became very upset. So I had to go through a couple more rounds of putting her down for a nap, reassuring her that the bed is okay to sleep in. Finally, success! It was fun watching her on the monitor because she got up a couple times to get a toy. In the end she laid in her bed with her head on the pillow and fell asleep. And at bedtime it was easy breezy! She crawled right in and was asleep within minutes.
Carla had her two year check-up and her official measurements are:
Weight: 25 lbs 8 oz (60%)
Height: 35 inches (75%)
So if you double her 2 year height it predicts that her growth potential as an adult is 5' 10". Woohoo! Doc also noticed that 2 molars have already broken through and 2 more are on the way. At the appointment I had to fill out the autism screening questionnaire. Well, I wasn't paying close enough attention to the directions and poor Miss Carla failed the test at first. So after a number of other questions for her doctor, we realized that I made a mistake and she is, in fact, not autistic. Can I blame it on my pregnancy brain?
On Saturday we headed out to the country for a good ol' fashioned Kluth family get together. One of my cousin's husband's grandparents let us use their ranch in New Ulm for a day. And it was a gorgeous day to be outside! We fished, watched cows, ate lots of great food, and the kids played together in the dirt. The fishing was amazing! Everybody who fished caught at least one. We tried to get the kids to touch the fish. Carla was the only brave one who touched the fish without a problem. When asked what they felt like she said, "Cold."
Our sweet little girl turned 2 years old and we partied hard today! Tons of family and friends helped us celebrate the occasion. We played music, danced, and rocked out! It was a room fun of kids and adults jamming together. Frank played guitar, Carla tried out her new bongo drum, we had various instruments for people to play (including some real African instruments that my family got when we lived in Nigeria when I was a toddler), and guests brought instruments too. It sounded GREAT!
We had all kinds of yummy food including some of her favorites - hummus, cashews, Chick-fil-a nuggets, cheese sticks, goldfish, powdered donuts, and banana bread.
The week prior to her birthday we spent a lot of time in preparation. She was singing the "Happy Birthday" song all week and she was saying, "I be 2!" As soon as we brought out the cake she knew what came next. Carla was singing "Happy Birthday" even before everyone else did. Then she chowed down on her chocolate cupcake with raspberry fluff icing (just like in one of her favorite books Bunny Cakes).
Carla loves being able to look at pictures and videos of herself on my phone, which she calls, "Carla Movies." But we only recently discovered this handy button on my iPhone that turns the video camera around so you can actually watch yourself on the screen as it's being recorded. Oh has this opened up a whole new world of entertainment, especially in situations when I need her occupied, like waiting in a doctor's office. Introducing the debut of her first self-made movie....
