The Grass is Greener

Anyone who has been to our house knows our backyard is a big ol' dirt pit.  Last summer the heat and drought killed off most of the grass.  What tiny bit of grass or weeds remained was then eaten by our chickens.  There was literally nothing left but dirt.  Now that we have a kiddo we were ready to reclaim the backyard for us to use again.  Frank build the chickens their own little fenced in yard around their coop.  Then we got to work on the rest of the yard.  When I saw "we" I really mean Frank did all the hard work.  He tilled the backyard, spread grass seed, and then shoveled and carted wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of new dirt to spread on top.  It took two days to complete.  Minutes after finishing it started to rain.  Someone was looking out for him!  Now four weeks later the backyard is a lush sea of green.  Beautiful!  We went with a native grass seed mix called Thunder Turf (mix of buffalograss, blue grama, and curly mesquite) that is supposed to need less water, less maintenance, and is able to survive the heat.
